Infected Toe Sidelines West, Doc Sees Transition to 2-Guard
Delonte West was fighting off a sore back as he looked to get out on the floor with the new-look Celtics as the preseason began. Today though, West is just hoping to get his shoe on without any pain.
Steve Bulpett reported on Delonte’s infected toe in today’s Boston Herald. Apparently the infection was caused by an ingrown toenail that was removed. When asked about his status and his return to action for Tuesday’s game against the Knicks, Delonte offered…
“But it’s no biggie,” he said. “I’m just dealing with the aftereffects. It hurt. I can’t put my shoe on. I don’t think you can practice without a shoe on.”
While an injury for West is never good news, the article that Bulpett offers readers gives great insight to how head coach Doc Rivers sees West fitting in with the new crop of point guards in Boston.
“I’m going to play him more as a 2,” the Celtics coach said. “He will play some point, especially down the stretch of games and the last possession when you need all shooters on the floor. So he will play it at times, but I love him at the 2.”
Assuming that West plays alongside Rajon Rondo and Sebastian Telfair more often, Celtics fans are likely to enjoy the small ball style of play that both General Manager Danny Ainge and Rivers often discuss.
In the 2005-2006 season, Delonte improved his shooting percentages from both inside and outside of the three point arc. Assuming that Rondo and Telfair can cut down on the turnovers and get West the ball while he’s open, we may see a great deal of points being scored from #13.

Why does Delonte have to be the one with the injuries?I can’t stand watching a Celtics game without him!Don’t you think last year was better? He was a starter. It stinks that he has an infected toe.It really hurts.Poor Delonte.Hope it gets better.
